Recognize your baby’s different crying sounds. Crying is the only way your baby can tell you that something is wrong. And the older your baby is, the easier it will be to recognize the different types of crying. At a particular time, you will know: now baby is crying because they are hungry. Or, they now feel alone. Sleep training (whether it’s the Ferber method or any type) is not recommended for babies until they’re 6 months old, says Jeffrey Bourne, MD, a pediatrician at Providence Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California.“They need to eat in the middle of the night before then,” he explains. But it’s also best to sleep-train before your baby is a year old.

When you can’t calm your crying baby it can feel like you’re helpless and, well, useless, but that is simply not true. Crying with support is essential to the well-being of our babies (you can read more here on the science behind it) and so knowing that you are providing that support will hopefully help bolster your ability to cope with.   So there is some crying when you use the Ferber method, but Dr. Ferber states that "only rarely will a child cry for several hours." More typically, your child will fall asleep during one of the earlier intervals, which depending on the night, you are checking on him every 10 or 15 minutes.

A baby begins crying as soon as it is brought into the world, and tears are the most primal language of communication for human beings. – women cry more than men. Crying .   Wrong! There will be days when you nurse, rock, walk, drive, wear, and try every comforting technique known to man or woman, and nothing will work. Don’t take this as a sign of failure. You do the best you can, and the rest is up to the baby. You have not failed as a mother even if your baby is miserable much of the time.
